You can transfer data from an old phone to the Google Pixel 9 whenever you’d like

Whenever you buy a new phone, there’s usually some excitement involved. Even if we wish we could immediately use all the new capabilities right away, moving your old data to the new device often causes a little hitch. Now, you may choose to source your critical data from the cloud or perform a direct transfer via cables, making the process generally straightforward.

As previously mentioned, the process is largely smooth, but if there is one criticism, it is that there isn’t much leeway—at the moment, Pixel users may only move their old data to a new phone during the setup process. If, as you can probably understand, you happen to miss that opportunity, you’re in a bit of a predicament. Fortunately, a new setting appears to potentially make the process a little more flexible, so it looks that may not truly be the case for Pixel 9 users.

An easier method for moving outdated data

This juicy gem was discovered by the people at Android Authority last week during the Made by Google event. Users will be able to move their data even after the initial setup process thanks to a new function that can be found in the Settings menu. You can find the setting by going to the Copy data section after selecting the Backup or Copy data menu. It then goes on to explain you what kinds of things you can copy and includes a disclaimer that assures you that no crucial information will be lost.

This setting is fantastic since it will automatically combine newly transferred data with previously stored info on the phone. Furthermore, the data transfer procedure will even maintain any customized settings on the replacement phone. With that said, Android Authority would like to point you that while this functionality will undoubtedly be welcomed and greatly appreciated, it was not actually tested.

Naturally, there’s no reason to believe that it won’t function or won’t be available on sale devices, given that it was already included in the OS. Fortunately, there won’t be much of a wait to test it out because the Pixel 9 series will be available in stores starting on August 22. As one might expect, this new approach will change everything for some people, particularly those who can’t wait to use their new phones right away.
