Web3 App Store Is Launched by IPhone to Take on Google and Apple

The web3-native app store being introduced by APhone, a decentralized cloud-based smartphone, is an attempt to challenge the Apple-Google duopoly.

Web2 apps and blockchain-based decentralized applications will be supported by the AppNest store, which was unveiled on June 19. The goal of Phone’s “free and open” AppNest is to compete with the up to 30% fees that Google and Apple charge for developers.

William Paul Peckham, CEO of iPhone, stated, “Our goal is to democratize access to technology and provide a full Web3 mobile experience to users worldwide, irrespective of geographical or economic barriers.”

According to APhone, in addition to Web2 apps like Facebook, Instagram, ChatGPT, and WhatsApp, AppNest also supports web3 apps like MetaMask, Phantom, and Binance.

Only the APhone app may access the AppNest marketplace.

Web3 phone Possibilities Demonstrated by Solana Mobile

After Solana Mobile’s Saga phone debuted in June 2022 and swiftly sold out in both the US and Europe, there has been a growing demand in web3 phones, which led to the launch of AppNest.

As memecoin issuers started airdropping tokens to $1,000 phone owners, Saga saw a sharp increase in popularity. Notably, purchasers of Saga tokens were eligible for a reduction of 30 million BONK tokens, which are currently valued at $643.5 and $1,364 at the token’s peak in March.

Following the debut of services for Saga users by Helium, a mobile plan provider that specializes in cryptocurrency, the phone also created a lot of attention in the decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) space.

The second phone from Solana Mobile, dubbed “Chapter 2,” went on pre-order in January and is anticipated to launch in the coming year.

Aethir is used by Phone for Cloud Computing

Aethir, a DePIN supplier, powers APhone. In March, the two teams joined together, with Phone utilizing Aethir’s decentralized cloud architecture.

“Aethir’s cutting-edge decentralized cloud technology is the crucial component that will enable us to offer users their mobile autonomy,” stated Julie Zhu, the tech lead for AppPhone. “We can offer capabilities that far surpass the limitations of physical devices by virtualizing smartphones on blockchain.”

The APhone is a cloud phone that works with any device that supports a web browser to run both standard and sophisticated Web3 apps. Alongside the Android operating system, it features a specialized seed vault.

Aethir introduced its decentralized cloud computing network on the Ethereum mainnet on June 12. Data centers and cryptocurrency miners, for example, are businesses with idle GPU resources that may join the network and earn rewards for their processing power.

Aethir garnered support from significant computer companies including as Nvidia, HPE, and Foxconn during its testnet phase, engaging over 500,000 users and completing a $146 million “node sale”.

On June 12, Aethir introduced its native ATH token. CoinGecko reports that following a wild introduction, ATH price activity has leveled off, losing just 1% in the last week. Also up 9% over the last day is ATH.
