American Sydney McLaughlin won the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the Toyko Olympics with a world-record 51.46 on Tuesday. The U.S’s. Dalilah Muhammad, the defending Olympic hero, won silver in 51.58, trailed by the Netherlands’ Femke Bol (52.03) in third.
The success gave McLaughlin her first Olympic award after she missed out on qualifying for the 400 hurdles finals as a 16-year-old in 2016. McLaughlin broke the world record she set at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.
Muhammad, who won gold in Rio in 2016, was endeavoring to become the first woman to repeat as Olympic boss in the 400 obstacles. Presently, McLaughlin, 21, will get the opportunity in Paris in 2024.
