In essence, the slightly less potent and slightly less expensive Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor from Qualcomm is a variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. According to the chip manufacturer, it’s intended to provide almost the same performance in less expensive devices as the company’s flagship mobile processor.
And among the first gadgets to utilize the new chip? The Edge 50 Pro from Motorola.
Although Motorola hasn’t yet made the phone official, Indian retailer Flipkart has published a number of images and important specifications. In addition, Abishek Yadav has released a promotional photo that appears to verify the phone’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor.
The phone sports a 6.7-inch pOLED screen that can reach a maximum brightness of 2000 nits and features a refresh rate of 144 Hz, support for HDR10+, and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. Additionally, there is a hole punch camera cut-out and an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Motorola is also showcasing the phone’s triple rear camera setup, which consists of a 50MP primary camera with “AI Photo Enhancement,” auto focus tracking, and adaptive image stabilization enhanced by AI, among other features.
The color accuracy of the display and the camera has been verified by Pantone.
Upon the release of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, Qualcomm stated that Chinese brands such as Honor, iQOO, Realme, and Xiaomi would be among the first to ship phones equipped with the new chip.
Though it is owned by Lenovo, a company with its headquarters in China, Motorola is also technically a Chinese brand, even though its market share is higher outside of China. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro appears to be set for release in India shortly, but it’s possible that other nations will follow suit.
Furthermore, Motorola has long used the tactic of choosing a marginally less expensive CPU in order to reduce expenses. Motorola’s choice of a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip over a more potent Snapdragon 8 series processor helps make the company’s Razr (2023) smartphone one of the most reasonably priced foldables to date. Additionally, the Motorola Edge series has a history of combining premium features with upper mid-range processors, thereby straddling the boundary between mid-range and flagship devices.
