Microsoft’s Xbox Series generation has generated approximately $80.8 billion, demonstrating its ability to generate substantial income since its launch. This number reflects the wide-ranging effects of the Xbox ecosystem and includes revenue from game sales, subscriptions, and microtransactions across all platforms.

Analyzing the Data

Microsoft’s Xbox division has accumulated the following over the last five fiscal years:

  • Total revenue since the Xbox Series introduction has been $80.8 billion.
  • $66.13 billion (81%) from Content & Services, which includes revenue from third-party platforms like PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam, Xbox Game Pass, digital game sales, and microtransactions.
  • Despite Xbox systems being sold at a loss, hardware made $14.61 billion (19%) from console sales and accessories.

A more accurate estimate that does not include pre-Xbox Series data has the total revenue made throughout the Xbox Series era at about $77.71 billion. This includes:

  • $63.31 billion (82%) from services and content
  • Hardware’s $14.34 billion (18%)

Shipments of the Xbox Series and Industry Trends

Although Microsoft does not reveal the precise number of Xbox consoles sold, analysts predict that up to 35.9 million Xbox Series X/S units may be shipped.

According to AMD, as of December 2024, more than 100 million Gen 9 consoles (PS5 + Xbox Series) had been shipped globally.

Sony affirms that 75 million copies of the PlayStation 5 have been shipped worldwide.
