Microsoft Notepad was first released in 1983, and in 2024, it will receive an AI update

The generative AI is being applied to Microsoft’s well-known Notepad program. Microsoft revealed Rewrite, a new Notepad tool that allows users to rewrite text using an AI model, on Wednesday. Rewrite allows users to change the length, reword, and tone of their writing.

Since 1983, Windows Notepad has existed as a text editor enabling users to take notes and produce basic text documents. Notepad hasn’t gotten much attention until recently because it’s a really basic application. We questioned why it took so long when Microsoft only launched spellcheck and autocorrect in March of last year. However, adding generative AI editing and summarizing capabilities is a more appropriate and modern update for the text editor.

How to utilize the Rewrite tool in Notepad

Highlight the text you wish to edit in Notepad, then right-click and choose Rewrite to utilize Rewrite for Notepad. You will be presented with a window that allows you to modify the text’s length, tone, and format. After making your choices, click Replace. Three possibilities will be produced by rewriting.

Additionally, you have the option to cancel your pick, modify the results, or copy the text. You can just go back if you’d like because previous iterations are recorded. You can also turn off rewrite in your app’s options.

Because Rewrite for Notepad operates in the cloud, you must be logged into your Microsoft account in order to access it.

Microsoft also unveiled new generative AI capabilities for Paint, another original application, in the same event. The most recent version of Windows 11 allows users to alter or enlarge images using generative fill and delete specific elements using generative erase.

Windows 11 users in the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany can now trial Rewrite for Notepad. All Windows 11 PCs can use Generative Erase, whereas Windows Insiders testers using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs can use Generative Fill initially.
