Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil declared earlier this week that customers should not be charged for 5G access by service providers.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has stated in a statement that it fully supports the government’s recent decision and will make sure that all mobile network operators adhere to the stated commitments.
While some telecom companies, like U Mobile and Maxis, have already made 5G available for free, others still list it as an extra paid feature.
Nevertheless, it has been noted that some service providers are still selling the faster connection as a stand-alone “booster” add-on that is priced apart from the available plans, even in the wake of Fahmi’s announcement.
Users are encouraged to use this link to submit any complaints they may have about 5G access charges to MCMC’s portal. Alternatively, they may contact the organisation directly through their hotline at 1-800-188-030.
As of December 31, 2023, the communications minister had also disclosed that 5G network services had effectively achieved 80.2% coverage in Malaysian populated areas.
According to Fahmi, the government is anticipated to declare this month that one wholesale network will become a dual network.
