In an exclusive Q&A with Verna, singer-songwriter McKenna Camille shares the inspiration and heartfelt meaning behind her latest single “Whiplash”, set to release on October 28th. Drawing from personal experiences, including her move from NYC to LA and the challenges of a long-distance relationship, McKenna describes “Whiplash” as a “sad love song to NYC.” With influences from artists like Gracie Abrams and Billie Eilish, this track promises to take listeners on a journey filled with longing, heartbreak, and hope.
1. Can you share the inspiration behind “Whiplash” and how it came to be?
“Whiplash” was inspired by two big things that happened in my life, the first being moving away from NYC to LA after graduating from NYU and secondly, being in a long distance relationship. I’ve been saying it’s a sad love song to NYC.
- What message or emotion are you hoping to convey with the release of “Whiplash”?
I’m hoping that anyone who has been in a long distance relationship or is away from a person/place they love can relate to the song. It’s a song about longing and about your body being one place and your heart being in another.
- How did the production process for “Whiplash” differ from your previous singles?
“Whiplash” was seamless. The lyrics easily flowed and I felt and still feel more connected to this song than any other.
- What can fans expect to experience when they first hear “Whiplash” on October 18th?
When “Whiplash” comes out on the 28th of October, everyone can expect to experience the journey of going back to and constantly leaving something you love. It’s hopeful and heartbreaking at the same time.
- Are there any specific musical influences that shaped the sound of “Whiplash”?
When writing “Whiplash” we looked towards artists like Gracie Abrams and Billie Eilish.
- Will “Whiplash” have an accompanying music video or visual elements tied to its release?
Absolutely! There will be both!
- How does “Whiplash” reflect your growth as an artist since your last release?
When creating “Whiplash” I definitely tapped into my feelings and emotions more. My last release “Thee Way” was kind of a silly song which highly contrasts “Whiplash”.
