Large Android TV updates are allegedly released by Google every two years

Today’s most recent version is Android TV 14, which was originally made available in beta in June 2023 and officially released during I/O 2024 in May. A few months ago, it made its debut on the Google TV Streamer, and it will soon be available on Chromecast with Google TV.

Android TV 13 was not “delivered to consumer devices,” but rather a “developer release only.” The majority of devices, including Chromecasts, are running Android TV 12 or earlier.

Although the exact Android version on which the next Android TV release will be built is unknown, 2026 is thought to be the anticipated release year.

More generally, it doesn’t really matter what version of Android your smart TV or streaming device is running; new versions of the operating system always bring new capabilities and performance improvements that developers may exploit. In the case of Google TV, many upgrades to the end-user experience take place at the app level and are made available through the Play Store.
