Industries in Queensland led by the mining sector played a critical role in powering Australia’s economic recovery, recent data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed.
According to the statistics, Queensland created more than 60 per cent of full-time jobs in Australia in February 2021. The total number of such jobs in the state has increased by 54,000 in just a month. In January, Queensland generated six times as many full-time jobs as New South Wales and four times as many as Victoria. Since January 2020, the state created 33,500 jobs, even as the former lost 45,000 jobs and the latter lost over 4,500.
Queenslanders, the data indicated, have benefitted from the ongoing operations in the energy sector, real estate sector, manufacturing and natural resources, including mineral project and mining.
In the real estate sector, almost every region in Queensland has witnessed a rise in property prices by more than 6 per cent.According to REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella, the increase in value across the state, which has continued into 2021, comes off the back of record-low interest rates. Other factors also include low stock availability for sale, improvements in consumer sentiment and Queensland’s unbeatable lifestyle.
At the same time, the resource, mining and energy sector has been creating thousands of new jobs in Queensland. All these sectors played a crucial role when the pandemic was in the most devastating form. Especially, mining provided the much-needed cushion to the state amid devastating economic impact, said Adani Mining CEO David Boshoff, who also heads the Adani Carmichael mine project.
Industry experts have credited the sector for mitigating the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.Local mining projects like Kevin’s Corner coal project, Alpha Coal project, Adani Carmichael mine, Galilee coal project, among others have played a significant role in this regard.The sector has the highest average weekly full-time adult earnings in Australia at $2742 or more than $142,000 per year, as per the Bureau of Statistics.
Apart from these, the manufacturing sector in Queensland also continued to expand with regional hubs established in Cairns, Townsville,Rockhampton, Gladstone, etc. The local manufacturing businesses are receiving great support to witness a positive growth trajectory. Going forward, three major manufacturers in North Queensland manufacturers are expected to share in more than $745,000 through the government’s Regional Manufacturing Hub Grants Program, helping boost their business and create more jobs.
Overall, most of the sector sat this juncture are delivering the goods for Queenslanders with respect to the state’s economic recovery. They are proficiently backed by a growing workforce looking for new jobs, homes and better transport.
