Google Says Gemini AI Powers Reddit Answers

Google has now verified that Reddit Answers, an internal AI search engine for Reddit users, is powered by Gemini. A Google PR representative told Mashable that Reddit Answers was already integrated with Gemini before the launch, despite some early rumors to the contrary.

Last December, Reddit Answers’ beta version went live. Additionally, Google revealed fresh information about Reddit Answers’ integration with Gemini during the Google Cloud Next presentation on Wednesday. “To help people more effectively find information, recommendations, discussions, and insights directly from the conversations and communities across Reddit,” the paper states, the application makes use of Gemini.

Reddit Answers is powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, among other tools, thanks to an existing partnership between Reddit and Google that gives the latter access to Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform. With answers derived directly from the Reddit community, Reddit Answers offers a comparable AI search experience to Google features that use Gemini, such as the standalone chatbot, Google Search’s AI Overviews, and AI Mode.

According to the report, “The integration of Vertex AI Search into Reddit Answers means users can find the information they need more quickly and accurately, and easily navigate to the conversations that matter to them,” stated Michael Clark, Google Cloud’s VP of North America GTM.

Google was forced to catch up in the AI arms race after ChatGPT’s launch upended the search industry. Up to 27% of American searchers currently utilize AI tools like ChatGPT rather than Google, according to a recent survey conducted by the media business Future.

In an attempt to get people to utilize its search engine again, Google has made some major adjustments. This includes a licensing agreement to train its models on Reddit material in addition to features like AI Overviews and AI Mode. The announcement of the Reddit-Google cooperation also significantly increased the visibility of Reddit’s forum pages in Google Search.

Reddit Answers is powered by Gemini, and the two businesses are becoming more and more intertwined.
