Google is releasing security updates for more of its generative AI products in anticipation of the next US presidential election. The business is imposing more limitations on its other generative AI products, while having previously declared that it would limit Gemini questions pertaining to the election.
The YouTube AI-generated summaries for Live Chat, Gems, Search AI Overviews, and picture production in Gemini will all be subject to these protections. These AI products will not answer to issues relevant to elections as part of the limits.
Google recognizes that generative AI is a relatively new technology and that errors can occur. For this reason, the company is limiting the features in order to avoid false information from spreading during the election.
Google’s vice president of trust and safety, Laurie Richardson, stated in a blog post that “our users depend on us to provide reliable and up-to-date information on topics like current candidates, voting processes, and election results— and this new technology can make mistakes as it learns or as news breaks.” This is especially true for federal and state-wide elections.
Although disinformation played a big role in the 2020 presidential election, generative AI’s development means that disinformation will likely play an even bigger role in the 2024 election. Google is attempting to stay ahead of the issue with the Friday announcement of the adjustments.
The business also revealed that, similar to previous elections, Google Search would soon gain an addition that will make it easier for citizens all throughout the nation to locate details regarding voter registration.
Users will also begin to notice new features on YouTube that facilitate the discovery of reliable information on political candidates and their parties. The video platform will begin to show reminders about where and how to vote as election day draws closer.
Google Play has introduced a new logo that will be shown on applications from official government agencies in an effort to make it easier for users to get trustworthy election information.
