We caught up with film producer Ekaterina Behor to tell us about her award-winning and highly unapologetic thriller film, ‘Volatility’ set around domestic violence.
Welcome to Verna! Congratulations on your awards and accolades in producing movies in Hollywood. The topic of your movie ‘Volatility’ is in parts quite horrifying. Can you explain the movie in your own words?
The movie ‘Volatility’ is about a young woman who falls for and, thus, becomes trapped in an extremely toxic relationship with an abuser. He nearly kills her after a fight, and she then must figure out an escape plan.
Jason Winn wrote and directed an incredible script. What was the inspiration behind the film?
Jason has a sister who had to endure an abusive relationship. We discussed the script extensively with her, making the characters and their individual stories truer to life. We wanted to show how complicated abuse can be and how it is not always blatantly obvious.
The movie has scooped up multiple awards and nominations what do you hope people take away from the film?
The story showcases the dangers of a co-dependent relationship that ends up destroying both of the main characters. These love partners reflect each other like mirrors and bring out the worst in each other. The movie shows that sometimes you have to leave a relationship that feels like a roller coaster before it is too late.
What are some of your favorite genres of film / TV show to produce?
This movie is a drama-thriller and I enjoyed working on it because I liked the idea. For me it is not about the genre – it is always about the story.
What were some of the highs and lows for you of making movies?
It was quite challenging to make a movie when COVID was still at a peak because of all the rules and regulations. It can also be difficult when there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen because you have to manage and combine the creative input of many different people with differing opinions. However, being on set is exhilarating, and it truly feels like you enter a different world. Post production is always great as well, and it’s amazing to be able to see the final product being slowly pieced together.
What advice can you give other producers trying to break into Hollywood?
I think there are two keys to being successful in film: knowledge and networking. It is important to put yourself out there and make yourself seen. You can be incredibly talented, but you have to show it to others in order to get ahead in the industry, whether that is online or in person.
