KingTrey is a blossoming artist from Chi-town that has spent nearly his whole life around music. He takes his love of life, God, and music, and uses to craft his own unique sound that endears him to his growing fan base.
It’s been a big year for the up and coming rapper who has gone from 10,000 followers to over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. That audience is currently vibing to his latest single, “PAY ME IN FULL”.
Trey has big goals in the music game and that’s evident on this track. This edgy, haunting beat get’s the adrenaline going right from the jump. Without any gimmicks or theatrics, this song is a straightforward message of arrival and allows him to show off the versatility of his flow and his craftiness as a lyricist.
Not to be overlooked in this song is the professional production quality. As an independent artist trying to stand out among the overcrowded sea of musicians, it is important to have a high-quality sound, and King Trey knows that and he brings that quality to his listeners.
In fact, everything I just said about “PAY ME IN FULL” can be applied to his entire music catalog. Each song is uniquely it’s own while remaining distinctly one of KingTrey’s. Being versatile while showing versatility as an artist is a tough achievement, but one that he has managed to perfect.
KingTrey is now focused on what’s next and continuing to grow his reach and audience. With a new music video for “PAY ME IN FULL” set to drop, we took some time to catch up with this future music star.
Our Conversation With King Trey
In this interview we talked about influences, life, and ambitions so you can get to know the music and the real person behind it. When your done, make sure to check out his links below and give him some follows and likes.
What got you into music?
When I was a kid I used to go to the studio with my dad. I never recorded anything back then but I got to see it all happen from a really young age. I was like 3 years old. I even remember him bringing me in the booth to say their group name and that being an intro to a song.
That’s amazing, what did your Dad do musically?
He rapped as well. He wasn’t very good though [Laughter].
What/Who influences your music?
God is a big influence in my music as well as life experiences and the people I love.
What is your favorite piece of music you have created?
My favorite piece of music I created would be my song “Average Joe” because it embodies all of the work I have put in and what differentiates me from other artists.
How does it differentiate you?
The song itself isn’t what does it necessarily. In the song, I’m rapping about the route I took. Not a lot of people took this route and were able to do the things I’ve done independently.
What inspires you when you write?
I would say this would also be God and the things I have experienced in my life.
Is there any life experience in particular that inspires you?
Yeah, a few big ones. How my dad left when I was 5 or 6 and I haven’t seen him since. How my house got robbed at gunpoint when I was like 13. The girl I’m in love with. Those are some big ones but I write about little things too. I put my whole life in the music.
What are your future goals in music?
I wanna be one of the best to ever do it. They just named Drake artist of the decade for 2010-2019 and that is what I’m aiming for in the 20’s.
What do you have in the works right now?
I am about to release the video for my latest single “PAY ME IN FULL.” I am also gearing up a release with a bigger artist, Kota the Friend, whom I look up to a lot.
Any ETA on when people can expect that from you?
Yeah, we’re trying to get it out this month which is September right now [Laughter]. Definitely within the next two weeks though.
What sets you apart from other artists?
What sets me apart from other artists is simply me being me. Nobody else could offer the world what I have to offer. Nobody can replicate what I leave for the world.
What is the biggest challenge as an artist in 2020?
The biggest challenge in 2020 is that there is no person to person interaction and everything is done online. Also, more and more people are trying to make careers out of this every day so if you’re not constantly working and doing things to set yourself out you’ll just be another one of the bunch.
With these challenges, how are you connecting with your fan base right now?
My fan base has grown a lot online since the pandemic started. I’ve gained at least 10 thousand followers and I’m over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify right now. I was only at like 10 thousand when back in February/March.
