Apple revealed last week that the AirPods Max with USB-C would soon provide lossless audio and extremely low latency. Owners of Apple’s over-ear headphones, which have lagged behind the AirPods Pro in recent years in terms of new capabilities, were pleasantly surprised. The company fixed the problem on Wednesday afternoon after experiencing a brief hiccup when releasing the firmware update required for the AirPods Max to unlock these newfound capabilities.
It was anticipated that firmware version 7E99, iOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 will be released early this week. However, late on Tuesday, Apple added an odd “coming soon” asterisk to the AirPods Max on a support page that provides the most recent firmware for each gadget. Although Apple never provided an explanation, the delay was covered by MacRumors and 9to5Mac. On Wednesday, the 7E101 software update for the AirPods Max was released.
Last week, the company also unveiled a new USB-C to 3.5mm cable for the AirPods Max. It’s important to note that you can use this cable with any firmware version; it connects the headphones to devices with a conventional headphone jack straight out of the box, and it’s a decent cable by the standards of these devices.
It is imperative that Apple streamline the AirPods update procedure. When your iPhone and AirPods are close to one another while the headphones are charging, it has been happening in the background at odd times for years. In contrast to how all other earbud manufacturers approach it, there is no method to manually initiate an upgrade.
