The macOS ChatGPT program received a significant update last month from OpenAI that allowed it to read on-screen material in specific apps. An upgrade that increases compatibility for Apple Notes and even more third-party apps is currently being released by the firm.
What’s new with macOS ChatGPT
The most recent version of ChatGPT for macOS allows for even more third-party program support, according to OpenAI. For example, it can now read text from Quip, Notion, and Apple Notes. Additionally, BBEdit, Android Studio, AppCode, and numerous other apps are now included in the list of compatible apps. The complete list of new apps that ChatGPT supports on Mac is as follows:
- BBEdit, MatLab, Nova, Script Editor, and TextMate are new IDEs;
- VS Code forks: Cursor, WindSurf, VSCodium, and VSCode Insiders;
- IDEs from Jetbrains: WebStorm, PHPStorm, PyCharm, RubyMine, RustRover, DataGrip, GoLand, CLion, Android Studio, and WebStorm;
- Terminal applications: Warp and Prompt;
- Applications for productivity: Quip, Notion, and Apple Notes
Only iTerm 2, Terminal, TextEdit, Visual Studio Code, and Apple’s Xcode were compatible with the feature when it was first released. For instance, instead of copying and pasting the code into the ChatGPT app, users can ask ChatGPT to read code from an Xcode project and provide feedback on how to make it better. Working with developer tools is made much easier by the fact that it can read content from multiple apps simultaneously.
Users have complete control over when and which apps ChatGPT can read for privacy reasons. According to OpenAI, “you have the same controls over the processing or storage of this data as you would normally have over anything else in your conversation history.”
Only ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers can integrate with third-party apps. When (or if) the feature will be made available to free ChatGPT users is unknown.
The ChatGPT program for macOS is available for download on OpenAI’s website. While ChatGPT Plus users can sign in and access their entire account, it is available for free. It is noteworthy that ChatGPT may be accessed straight from Siri in macOS 15.2, which was just made available to the general public.
