A new AI ‘Rewrite’ function in Windows Notepad will allow you to highlight text and use generative AI to alter and rewrite it.
Without complex formatting or other capabilities typically seen in word processors, simple text editors provide a means of editing or writing plain text. Typically utilized by programmers and coders, text editors come in a variety of forms, with Microsoft Notepad being one of the most popular.
Since version 1.0, Windows Notepad has been a feature of Microsoft’s widely used operating system and has undergone multiple revisions. New features and tools have been introduced, but its fundamental functionality has not changed. Microsoft introduced Notepad’s zoom feature and the option to highlight text and use Bing to look up that word or string of text during the Windows 10 period.
As of right now, Notepad version 11.2410.15.0 for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels for Windows 11 has generative AI tools and features added by Microsoft.
“With this update, we are introducing the ability to rewrite content in Notepad with the help of generative AI,” Microsoft writes in the announcement. “You can rephrase sentences, adjust the tone, and modify the length of your content based on your preferences to refine your text.”
To use the new Rewrite tool, select the test you wish to have rewritten by AI, and it will produce three different versions for you to select from. To obtain even more variations, you can choose Retry after fine-tuning the output or adjusting the settings to your liking. Changing the tone and lengthening or shortening the highlighted text are two possible possibilities.
Users of Windows 11 in the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany are the only ones who can sample Notepad’s new AI Rewrite function. Because Notepad Rewrite is cloud-based, it needs AI Credits, which are accessible to Copilot Pro and Microsoft 365 users.
