Google is planning to increase the minimum quality standards for Android apps and will soon be removing any that don’t live up to the mark from the Play Store. applications with “limited functionality and content,” such as text-only applications, single wallpaper apps, or apps that are essentially made to do nothing at all, will no longer be allowed on the Play Store as of August 31st, according to the company’s most recent modification to its spam policy.
These add to the current limitations that prohibited malfunctioning apps that crash, don’t install, are not responsive, or behave strangely in other ways. In order to “ensure apps can meet the uplifted standards for the Play catalog and engage users through quality functionality,” Google says it has added the extra requirements.
Prior attempts have been made by Google to better monitor the programs that are housed on its Play Store. According to Android Authority, in 2023, 2.28 million apps were removed from the service due to policy violations and risks to user security. In the same year, Google revealed that it had banned 333,000 “bad” Google Play accounts due to a pattern of serious policy breaches as well as worries about malware and fraud.
