100 million Galaxy phone owners, Samsung is preparing a major AI surprise; see if your name is included

On January 17, Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy AI project at its global Unpacked event in San Jose. With a software update, the company hopes to make Galaxy AI available to owners of older devices as well. Currently, the suite of cloud-based and on-device AI features is exclusive to the new Galaxy S24 series smartphones.

Further Samsung devices will soon support Galaxy AI.

According to Samsung, in the first half of 2024, its Galaxy AI will be available on “selected Galaxy devices.” Along with the expected Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5, the company also intends to use AI intelligence to launch the comparatively low-cost Galaxy S23 FE. The update is also available for the tablets, Galaxy Tab S9.

According to TM Roh, president and head of MX Business at Samsung Electronics, the features will be released to roughly “100 million Galaxy smartphones for the global expansion of mobile AI” this year, he stated in an interview with the Korea Herald.

It is yet to be seen if Samsung will bring everything or, depending on the model, take a more limited approach.

As of right now, Galaxy AI will stay free.

In response to a query about paid AI, Roh stated that while the business is not currently exploring the possibility, it might be in the future as AI features become more sophisticated and expensive. Samsung may begin charging customers for at least some of its Galaxy AI services after the “end of 2025” window, according to the product pages for its Galaxy S24 series of smartphones.
