Later this year, Apple is expected to unveil its newest iPhone 16 lineup, which is anticipated to be jam-packed with Generative AI features. With the Pixel 8 and the recently unveiled Galaxy S24 series both including artificial intelligence-based tools and apps, the Cupertino, California-based company’s AI push has lagged far behind that of rivals Google and Samsung. It’s likely that iOS 18 will include generative AI capabilities for the upcoming iPhone. According to a recent report, Apple may be preparing its largest-ever operating system update in the history of the business for its upcoming major release.
iOS 18 is anticipated to be “one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history,” according to a 9to5Mac report that references Mark Gurman of Bloomberg’s most recent Power On newsletter. In addition to new AI features, iOS 18, also known as Crystal, is expected to bring “ambitious changes.”
“The company views the new operating system as one of the biggest iOS updates, if not the biggest, in its history, I’ve been told. Given this information, Gurman’s newsletter purportedly stated that “Apple’s developers conference in June should be fairly exciting.” Gurman had predicted earlier this month that Apple would probably make the AI features of iOS 18 public at its June Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
According to reports, Siri, the iPhone’s on-device assistant, is about to undergo a significant AI makeover. Apple has been quiet about the generative AI features that will be included in iOS 18. Large Language Model (LLM) from Apple is anticipated to power the redesigned Siri. Improved text suggestions, playlist creation, and music recommendations are just a few of the AI features that could be added to other apps like Apple Music and Messages. According to Gurman’s October 2018 statement, AI-based updates may also be coming for Apple’s productivity suite of apps, which includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.
Over the course of the upcoming year, Apple is expected to spend about $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,300 crore) developing AI features for its devices. Gurman stated back in November that since the iPhone 16 series won’t be receiving any significant hardware upgrades, iOS 18 will need to be “extra impressive.”
